Way back 20 years ago, when I was just 15, I used to think the only medicine that could solve health problems in the world without side effects was herbal medicine.

Herbal medicines vs. chemical medicines

However, I grew up realizing that both herbal and chemical medicines have their strengths and weaknesses.

Are you aware that no medicine is dangerous until misapplied or unless it was purposely manufactured or made to destroy? Both herbal and chemical or pharmaceutical drugs have their pros and cons.

Unlike biased me, when I was a kid I used to think there was no good medicine aside from herbal medicine. However, I’m very much abreast with every detail of these two types of medicines, their benefits and side effects, their myths and facts.

In this era, when we are not feeling well, we have more options than ever for getting better.

Some people reach for over-the-counter or prescription drugs, while others prefer herbal medicine.

However, what’s the difference between these two approaches? How do they work, and which one is better?

Read this article to explore herbal medicine and chemical drugs to understand their benefits, risks, and what might be the best choice for you.

herbal medicines

Herbal medicine, which is also called botanical medicine or phytotherapy is the use of plants or plant extracts to treat illness and promote health.

The practice of using herbal medicine to treat illness is not a thing of today.

It has been around for thousands of years, with ancient cultures like Egyptians, Chinese, and Native Americans using herbs for healing long before modern science developed.

I remember those days when I was growing up and you needed to drink some herbal concoction early in the morning before breakfast and last thing before bed else you wouldn’t have peace in the house.

My grandmother insisted everyone in the house drink this herbal concoction before eating anything.

I tell you it was protecting us against strange sicknesses and other infections.

I know some people have the misconception that herbal medicines cause kidney stones ]or problems but I can tell you emphatically from experience that taking herbal medicines on the correct doses never causes any kidney problems or other related complications.

Kidney stones

Furthermore, little do most people realize that they indirectly consume herbal medicines in the very food they eat every day.

Do you know of ginger, garlic, and onion? Do you consume ‘’Kontomire”? then my dear erase that misconception of kidney stones.

Common Examples Of Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies are made from different parts of plants such as leaves, roots, seeds, and flowers. Some common examples include:

  • Ginger: Ginger is used to treat nausea and digestive issues

  • Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is often applied to the skin to soothe the burns and wounds

  • Echinacea: Echinacea is usually taken to boost the immune system and also to fight cold

  • Cinnamon, garlic, turmeric, and others are combined to boost the immune system, improve fertility, and help relieve certain sexually related problems.

How Are Herbs Consumed?

Herbs are consumed in several forms which include:

  • Teas

  • Capsules

  • Powders

  • Extract

Why Do Some People Prefer Herbal Medicines To Chemical Ones?

Some people love herbal medicines more than chemical ones because they are natural, and they believe they are safer or have fewer side effects.

Some people love herbal medicines because that is what they were introduced to while growing up. I’m a perfect example of this.

What Are Chemical Drugs?

Chemical Drugs

Chemical drugs, also called pharmaceutical drugs or synthetic drugs, are medications developed and produced by scientists in laboratories.

They are often made from chemicals either derived from natural sources or completely synthesized.

Each drug is designed to target a specific condition or symptoms.

People who were initially introduced to chemical drugs while growing up also fear taking herbal medicines for treatment. A perfect example is me.

There is also a misconception that chemical medicines pose serious side effects even after treatment. Far from the truth.

When I grew up tasting chemical drugs at the right dosage for the treatment of malaria, I realized that chemical drugs sometimes work faster in the treatment of certain medical conditions.

Common Examples Of Chemical Drugs

Some common examples of chemical drugs include the following:

  • Aspirin: Aspirin is a common pain reliever anti-inflammatory drug. If you have consumed this before, you will realize taking it at the right dosage doesn’t amount to any side effects.

  • Ibuprofen: Ibuprofen is one of the popular pain relievers that also is used to curb fever inflammation

  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics such as penicillin are used to kill bacteria and also treat infections

Why Do Some People Prefer Chemical Medicines To Herbal Medicines?

People who were introduced to chemical drugs as the best medicine while growing up will surely prefer chemical drugs to herbal ones.

Also, some people love to use chemical drugs for treatment because chemical drugs undergo rigorous testing and clinical trials to ensure they are effective and safe before they are approved by health authorities such as the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).

One thing that ensures security on the side of the consumer which some people love to consume chemical drugs is they are often prescribed by doctors or bought over the counter at pharmacies.

How Do Herbal Medicines And Chemical Medicines Work?

Herbal and chemical medicines work by interacting with our bodies, but they do so in varied ways.

Do you want to know how they work? Below are how they work:

Herbal Medicine

The active compounds in herbs interact with our body’s systems to promote healing. For example, peppermint tea can relax the muscles in your digestive tract, hence easing stomach discomfort.

However, since herbs are not as concentrated as chemical drugs, their effects might be milder and take longer to work.

Chemical Medicines

Usually, chemical drugs are highly concentrated, meaning they contain a specific amount of active ingredient that is scientifically proven to treat a particular condition.

For example, the active ingredient in aspirin blocks certain chemicals in the body that cause pain and inflammation, providing quick relief.

Safety And Side Effects Of Herbal And Chemical Medicines

When it comes to safety, both herbal and chemical drugs have their pros and cons. I know you want to know so here we go:

Herbal Medicine

On herbal medicines, because herbal remedies are natural, usually people assume they are completely safe.

However, that is not always true. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t be detrimental.

Some herbs can cause allergic reactions, with other medications, or be toxic in large amounts.

For example, too much licorice root can lead to high blood pressure.

Chemical Medicines

With chemical medicines, drugs are carefully tested for safety, but they can still have side effects.

These side effects can range from mild, like drowsiness or an upset stomach, to severe, like allergic reactions or organ damage.

This is why it is important to take chemical drugs exactly as prescribed and to consult a doctor if you experience any problems.

Which One Is Better Herbal Or Chemical Medicines?

The answer to whether herbal medicines or chemical drugs are better is not straightforward.

It depends on the situation and the individual’s health needs. Below are some instances:

For Mild Conditions

For minor issues like cold, mild pain, or digestive discomfort, herbal remedies might be a good first step.

They are usually gentler and have fewer side effects. However, it’s important to choose the right herb and use it correctly.

For Serious Conditions

If you are suffering from a serious illness or infection, chemical drugs are often necessary.

They are more potent and act faster, which is crucial in many medical situations.

For example, bacterial infections often require antibiotics, and using herbs alone might not be effective.

Combining Both Herbal And Chemical Approaches

In some cases, it is very important to combine both herbal and chemical approaches.

This approach is known as integrative medicine. For example, someone with anxiety might use prescribed medication alongside herbal teas like chamomile to help manage their symptoms.

However, it’s ideal to consult with a healthcare provider before combining treatments, as some herbs can interact with medications in dangerous ways.

Are Chemical Medicines Effective Than Herbal Medicines?

Drugs are more concentrated in chemicals and very effective in treating serious illnesses.

However, herbal medicines are popularly very limited in scientific evidence of their effectiveness. However, they are usually used to treat mild illnesses.

Can Herbal Medicines Help Boost Ovulation And Fertility?

Yes, the combination of some herbs such as cinnamon, turmeric, Aidan fruits, garlic, and several others can be prepared as a concoction to boost ovulation and as well increase fertility in both males and females.
